Op-ed on UK AI Summit @ UKTN

When the UK’s AI Safety Summit was first announced as part of the government’s bid to be a global leader in artificial intelligence regulation, it was said it would bring together “key countries, leading tech companies, and [leading] researchers” in the field. In the following weeks and months, there was little transparency as to who precisely that meant.

Geopolitical complexities, such as the Chinese government’s controversial participation, as well as the reluctance on the part of Germany’s chancellor Olaf Scholz to attend, no doubt complicated matters.

Nevertheless, perhaps despite the government’s best intentions, with little over a week until the summit, there is still no official published list of attendees. Some weeks ago the government revealed that the conference would be limited to a select group of just 100 individuals, evenly divided into politicians, CEOs from “top AI companies”, academics, and civil society representatives....
